「左手のアーカイブ」プロジェクトは、２０１０年、現在も左手のみによる演奏活動を続ける「左手のピアニスト」智内威雄が中心となり発足しました。

その目的は、左手のためのピアノ作品という忘れ去られてしまった貴重な音楽作品の発掘・復興と、左手を主とする片手演奏の認知向上と普及振興にあります。

以下の3点を主要な活動として位置づけています。

１）埋もれてしまった歴史的名曲の録音・映像の作品化
２）入門・初級・中級・上級者のための楽譜、新曲・編曲を含む委嘱楽譜の作成
３）左手のための演奏指導

１）において、演奏されなくなってしまった左手の楽曲を、智内威雄の演奏を中心として収録し、一般に入手しやすい形でパッケージ化します。演奏映像を定点でカメラに収めることで、片手演奏特有の指や体の使い方などの演奏法を学ぶことができるよう配慮しています。

２）において、元来、上級者あるいは職業演奏家のために書かれた左手演奏用楽曲の世界に、様々なレベルを設定することで、より多くの演奏者がチャレンジできレベルアップしていくことができる環境を作ります。さまざまなキャリアを有する作曲者に新たな楽曲の作曲や編曲を委嘱し、現在進行形の音楽芸術としての復興を目指すとともに、作曲家と演奏家のネットワークを作ります。

３）においては、高い技術を持つ左手のピアニスト達が、レッスンやワークショップなどを通して、参加者に演奏上のアドバイスを行う機会を作ります。さまざまなレベルの演奏家・愛好家のネットワーク作りを促進します。

このように日々、プロジェクトメンバー間で密な連携をとりつつ地道な活動を継続している一方で、昨今は活動を支援してくださる一般の皆様との接点として、イベントの開催にも注力しています。

現在「左手のアーカイブ」が主催するイベントとしては、「左手のアーカイブコンサート」と「ワンハンドピアノフェスタ！」の２つがあります。

「左手のアーカイブコンサート」は、第一線で活動する左手のピアニストによるライブ演奏を通して、左手演奏の魅力を知っていただくコンサートイベントであり、「左手のアーカイブ」の活動報告等メッセージをお伝えしつつ、支援者の皆様との交流を図る場として機能しています。

「ワンハンドピアノフェスタ！」は、2013年より始めた、公開レッスン、発表会、講義を含む、いわゆるワークショップ形式の交流イベントです。ここでは左手のみならず、片手演奏に親しむ者同士の交流と、演奏発表の場を提供します。

この優れた音楽分野を世に広く知らせると同時に、潜在的に相当数にのぼるといわれる右手にハンディキャップをもつ演奏家に、音楽を続けるひとつの道を示したい。智内威雄のこのような強い願いから始まった「左手のアーカイブ」プロジェクトは、さらに幅広い層の人々へ向けて、そして次の世代へとバトンを手渡すことを視野に入れた活動を展開しています。

The “Left Hand Archive” Project was launched in 2010, led by Takao Tchinai, a “Left-Hand Pianist” who continues to perform exclusively with his left hand to this day.

The project aims to rediscover and revive valuable piano works composed for the left hand that have largely been forgotten, as well as to promote broader recognition and awareness of one-handed piano performance.

The project’s core activities are centered around three main objectives:

1. Recording and producing audio-visual works of historically significant pieces that have fallen into obscurity.

2. Commissioning and creating sheet music for performers of all levels—beginner, intermediate, advanced—including newly composed and arranged works.

3. Providing instruction in left-hand piano performance.

For the first objective, previously neglected left-hand repertoire is recorded primarily through performances by Takao Tchinai and made widely accessible to the public. Special care is taken to record performance videos from a fixed angle, allowing viewers to study the unique hand and body techniques required for one-handed playing.

The second objective addresses the traditionally high-level demands of left-hand piano works by offering materials for a range of skill levels. This creates an environment where a broader group of pianists can challenge themselves and develop their skills. By commissioning new compositions and arrangements from composers with diverse backgrounds, the project seeks to foster the ongoing evolution of musical artistry and to build a network connecting composers and performers.

The third objective provides opportunities for experienced left-hand pianists to offer lessons, masterclasses, and workshops, promoting the exchange of performance advice and techniques. It also fosters a network among performers and enthusiasts of various skill levels.

While the project continues its steady activities through close collaboration among its members, in recent years it has also focused on organizing events to engage with the broader public.

Currently, the “Left Hand Archive” organizes two main events: the “Left Hand Archive Concert” and the “One-Hand Piano Festa!”

The “Left Hand Archive Concert” is a live performance event featuring professional left-hand pianists. It aims to showcase the appeal of left-hand piano performance while also serving as an opportunity to report on the project’s activities and interact with supporters.

The “One-Hand Piano Festa!” launched in 2013, is an interactive event that includes public lessons, recitals, and lectures in a workshop format. It provides a space not only for left-hand pianists but for all one-handed performers to connect and present their performances.

Through these efforts, the project seeks not only to bring wider attention to this remarkable field of music but also to offer a pathway for pianists with disabilities affecting their right hand—believed to be a significant yet often invisible population—to continue pursuing music. Born from Takao Tchinai’s passionate wish to make this possible, the “Left Hand Archive” Project is committed to passing the baton to future generations and expanding its reach to a broader audience.
